Virtual Console obscurity Part IX

Friday November 30, 11:08 AM Virtual Console obscurity Part IX

Brits love baseball and anime; it’s what we’re famous for all over the world. That’s why we’re going nuts over Baseball Stars II and Dynasty Hero on Wii VC.

There are now 167 retro games to download via Nintendo Virtual Console onto Wii. This is impressive. Sadly this week’s games are not quite so thrilling – well, we don’t think so but perhaps your passion for 2D baseball and run-of-the-mill action-platformers runs deeper.

After last week’s high of King of Fighters ’94 we were, foolishly, hoping for KOF ’95 this time around for Neo-Geo. Nope, it’s Baseball Stars II: a creaky old ballpark that we remember avoiding putting 20p coins into during 1992. It’ll cost you 900 Wii Points (roughly £5) to play on Wii in 2007. It has charm, granted, but one for the history books. Like, you’ve already got Wii Sports for goodness’ sake.

We’re feeling only slightly less poisonous towards The Dynastic Hero. After all how could we? The hero is cute and his world is colourful, but the action is generic all the same. The Dynastic Hero made good use of the space available on the Turbografx CD-ROM at the time with a lengthy intro and (ahem) ‘CD Quality Music’ – that is, synthesised anime anthems rendered with alarming clarity after slightly intrusive load times. It’s recognised as a Turbografx fave, but at 800 Wii Points (£3-4) it’s your decision.
