USA: Wheels fall off the PS3 bandwagon [PS3]

It’s all going horribly wrong for Sony Stateside, as the NPD figures for April 09 reveal.

You need proof? How about Sony consoles occupying the lowest three positions on the US hardware sales chart and the PlayStation 3 being comprehensively outsold by the PlayStation 2. That’s all down to a recent price cut for the latter, in case you’re wondering what the flip is going on.

However, Sony’s pain seems to be Nintendo’s massive gain. While the PSP languishes at the bottom of the pile the DS has soared to the top, shifting a frankly incredible 1.04 million units following the launch of the camera-enhanced DSi. Say ‘cheese’ Sony…

The Wii’s doing decent numbers too, but is selling a mere fraction of its handheld compatriot. And then there’s the Xbox 360, which only shifted a few thou’ more than the PS2. That’s a 7% dip year-on-year for the big ‘box, although quarterly sales were actually up 28% due to the continuing success of GTAIV.

So Microsoft is plenty pleased for the time being. Perhaps not as pleased as Nintendo, though. Here are the figures:

Nintendo DS 1.04M
Wii 340K
Xbox 360 175K
PlayStation 2 172K
PlayStation 3 127K
PSP 116K

Meanwhile the big winner in the software stakes for April was Wii Fit, which even managed to outpace Pokemon Platinum. Other games – particularly those on Sony platforms – were nowhere in comparison. Witness:

Wii Fit (Wii) – 471K
Pokemon Platinum (DS) – 433K
Mario Kart Wii (Wii) – 210K
Wii Play (Wii) – 170K
The Godfather II (Xbox 360) – 155K
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) – 122K
New Super Mario Bros. (DS) – 119K
Mario Kart DS (DS) – 112K
Guitar Hero Aerosmith (Xbox 360) – 110K
The Godfather II (PS3) – 91K
