Guitar Hero is one of the biggest-selling video game franchises in the world. So how d’you like the sound of Guitar Hero: The Concert Tour? Or maybe Guitar Hero: The Reality TV Show? And that’s not the end of the possible Activision Blizzard brand extensions either – discussions are apparently underway to flex the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft franchises too: “They are being talked about for the big screen,” says a unnamed Reuters’ source who claims to have ‘knowledge of the details.’ We can certainly see the CoD and WoW movie adaptations working well, providing they’re handled with all due reverence. The Guitar Hero TV show and tour, though? Well, let’s just say the jury’s still out on those, even if Activision boss Bobby Kotick thinks they’ve got legs. All that aside, if anyone’s got the money to squander on such projects right now it’s Activision Blizzard. First quarter revenues have tripled compared to this time a year ago, and the company has now added $100m to its forecast year-end earnings, which brings the grand total to a staggering $4.3 billion. Meanwhile it looks like Activision Blizzard’s herd of cash-cows will be mooing contentedly for some time to come. Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits and a Van Halen edition are both in the works, as are Band Hero for younger gamers and the fun sounding DJ Hero, which comes bundled with a turntable peripheral (pictured). Can’t wait to have a go on that!
