Wii the UK’s favourite console

Tuesday January 13, 11:45 AM

The Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the good old Wii. Together they’ve amassed an installed user base of ten million in the UK and Ireland, but it’s the latter console that truly rules the roost. That’s the unsurprising revelation from a new report published by mega-retailer Game today.

So that’s the state of play for the big home consoles as of January 3rd 2009 and after what Game says was a bumper, Credit Crunch-defying Xmas (group sales are up 16.6%). Add to that a further 12 million for PSP and DS handhelds and that brings the number up to a very cool 22 million.

Breaking that almighty total down a little we’re able to see the exact running order. It’s pretty much as you might expect too, with the Playstation 3 adding a further million units in 2008 bringing its total to 1.9 million. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 now sits (noisily) next to the massive tellies in 3.2 million UK/Irish homes, compared to just 1.8 million this time last year.

It’s an impressive increase in both instances, for sure. However the Wii overshadows ’em all with sales more than doubling from 2 million to 4.9 million over the same timeframe. Have it, etc.

The ownership continues in the handheld sector too, where combined sales of the DS and DS Lite stand at 8.8 million, up from 5.4 last year. In comparison the PSP has added just 600K sales since last January with today’s installed base standing at 3.2 million.

Game over for Sony? We wouldn’t be quite so quick to call it. Particularly if the rumoured spring price cuts become a reality...
