360 booms, PSP busts [X360]

While Sony execs stand by their PS3 pricing resolutions their Microsoft counterparts are snipping the ends off 12”stogies, firing party poppers at random and chasing each other around the boardroom table, high on sherry and wearing miniature police helmets. Or something like that. Either way Xbox 360 sales have been going a bundle since the price drop.

Indeed, according to figures released by Chart Track the Xbox 360 sales have enjoyed a massive 260% hike since the discount was announced. The arrival of the mean-looking Elite unit probably had an effect too, no doubt. Whatever the case it appears that good taste has broken out amongst the British gaming public, and just in time for Bioshock and Halo 3.

Against all that Sony is having a tough old time with the PlayStation Portable. The worse week ever for sales, in fact – at least 32% down on the same time last year according to Chart Track’s data. That’s all due to consumers keeping their PSP-purchasing cash in reserve for the slimmer, smarter model which launches on Sept 14th, says Sony. Hopefully.

All that said, in both cases Chart Track has refused to provide actual sales figures, meaning that the Xbox 360 could be selling 260% more than the dozen or so boxes it shifted the week before the price drop and the PSP 32% less than the half million it did last year. Yeah, that is kind of unlikely...
