Gran Turismo 5 ready for launch. Nearly... [PS3]

Gran Turismo 5 could be launched at any time now, says Polyphony Digital boss, Kazunori Yamauchi. However he’d rather hang on until such time that every single detail is as precise and perfectly formed as humanly possible before doing so. Hmmm...

So how long have we been waiting for this game now? Seems like it’s been looming on the horizon ever since the PS3 was announced, let alone launched. Nevertheless GT5 is finally slated for a spring 2010 release, notwithstanding any further delays. It’s all for the good of the game, though, as Yamauchi tells Japan’s Famitsu magazine (as translated by 1up.com):

“The scale of this title is just dizzying, so daily progress is slow, but it's still going forward at a steady clip. All the basic stuff is complete, but we're trying to give everything that little bit extra at present.

“We could release it any time we want, really, but I want to have that classic GT-style 'did we really have to go this far?' feel going. I want to go way beyond gamer expectations.”

Well, it’d better be worth the wait, is all we’ll add to that. Although we note that Forza developers Turn 10 will have will have cracked two high-quality and super-realistic next-gen racers out of the door while Yamauchi and co. have been adding superfluous coats of spit and polish to this one. But let’s just wait and see if GT5 really is that much better than anything else before it.

Meanwhile Yamauchi has been talking about his decision to use the Corvette ZR-1 on the GT5 boxart:

“The auto industry is going through a transition period right now, and it's a dangerous time for a lot of companies.”

“It's a major support of the entire world economy, and the vast amount of talent and output it produces is one reason why GT is what it is. I wanted to go back to the roots with what makes a car cool, so I chose GM's Corvette ZR-1 to try and cheer the auto industry up a little.”

No doubt they’re feeling better already, eh.
