PS3 firmware 2.80: Don’t expect fireworks [PS3]

Wednesday June 24, 10:33 AM

In the annals of earth-shaking, zeitgeist-redefining declarations Sony’s announcement of PS3 firmware update 2.80 ranks very lowly indeed. In fact we’re not even sure the scale goes down far enough.

Here’s the skinny, direct from PlayStation Network honcho Eric Lempel. As you’ll see, he’s having difficulty containing his enthusiasm:

“Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.”

You get that? It's coming soon – i.e. not today – and it will benefit the playback of some – i.e. not all – PS3 games. In point of fact Lempel doesn’t bother to name even one of the titles affected or a single other improvement the new update brings.

Makes you wonder why they bother, doesn't it. Although Mr. Lempel may yet return with a fulsome list of mind-blowing enhancements. Sshhyyeah, right...
