According to Marketing trade mag, New Media Age, Nintendo Europe is about to commit one of its biggest ever spends to marketing the Wii this coming winter – a figure of 10-11 million Euros is being bandied around, almost too casually. We’re not sure how far 10-11 million Euros actually goes these days – especially for a pan-European marketing campaign. However we do know that Nintendo plans to spend a goodly amount of its wedge on online activities. Indeed, speaking to the magazine Nintendo’s Rob Lowe (no, not that one) admitted that a “large proportion” would be dedicated to the web, and that during Wii launch week they would target established web companies (such as Yahoo!- yay!) and “totally take them over… You’ll go online and see Wii everywhere,” he added for extra effect. Yeah, well we don’t patronise those sorts of websites, Rob, but cheques are payable to uk.videogames.games.yahoo.com etc… Meanwhile Nintendo of America (well, Canada) is really putting its money where its mouth is and has stated that it is targeting a truly grand total of 1 million Wii consoles available for the North American launch on November 19th. At least that’s the word according to Nintendo Canada’s General Manager, Ron Bertram. If that’s true – and there’s no guarantee that it will be - it rather shades the slender amount of consoles put out for the problematic 360 launch, and totally slaughters the 400K Playstation 3s allegedly earmarked for the US on November 17th. It’ll be interesting to see how it all works out, but there’s really only one way to settle it – FIGHT!
