Sony techs have been chatting about the PlayStation 3 Eye Camera at Brighton’s ‘Develop’ conference. By all accounts they’ve got it doing facial recognition. Game on!

The peripheral is now able to register the orientation of your head, which is already impressive enough. But there’s more – it can also detect facial features such eyes, nose and mouth, as well as the gender and rough age of the face it’s looking at. It can even tell if you’re smiling or not. Spooky.

Of course these new functionalities, if cleverly implemented, could change the shape of the motion-sensing melee in prospect – particularly versus Microsoft’s Project Natal. Put another way, we can’t wait to see the fireworks...
