WarHawk and Heavenly Sword dates officially confirmed [PS3]

Wednesday August 22, 12:28 PM

It’s not going to be much of a Games Convention if somebody doesn’t start making with the groundbreaking announcements pretty damn soon. As it stands we’re getting a bunch of release dates and that’s about it. Hrrmmph…

Nevertheless we’re pleased to get these two officially confirmed by Sony, especially Warhawk, which has so far confounded our (admittedly low) initial expectations by being excellent throughout the beta demo we’ve sampled – like some kind of mad, nearly massively multiplayer warparty.

Anyway, as per the internet rumour Sony will launch the downloadable version of the game on PlayStation Network on August 28th, priced at £19.99. Meanwhile, and puzzlingly, the retail version follows a few (possibly three) weeks later in September. This will set you back £39.99 but it does include a Jabra Bluetooth Headset, an instruction manual and a no doubt lovely box. Given that the Xbox 360 equivalent wireless headset sells for £29.99 this is probably quite a bargain.

Next up, but marginally less exciting, is Heavenly Sword. There’s little doubting the brilliant visuals employed in the game and it certainly has its really exciting moments. However the button-bashing gameplay won’t be everyone’s cup o’ tea. Still, if feisty redheads are your bag (and if not, why?) it’s a decent addition to your PS3 collection come September 14th (19th in the rest of Europe).

Back to those internet rumours for a mo’, and the Threespeech ‘semi-official’ Sony blog is reporting a supposedly leaked release schedule (from Germany again) in which Folklore is dated as October 10th, Lair on Oct 24th, Eye of Judgement the same day (129.95 Euros, approx £70 including the neat camera accesory) and the much awaited Singstar for some time in October (around £40 including the microphone).

All dates have yet to be officially confirmed by Sony, but does that look like a mainstream consumer-attracting line-up to you? Moreover are you willing to pay nearly £400 to buy the console to play these titles? Particularly when you can get a bog-standard Core Xbox 360 which'll quite happily play Bioshock, Strangelhold, COD4, Halo 3 et al for around £200 less. Surely some kind of pricing structure bombshell has to be dropped at Sony's Leipzig conference later on today.
