Sony talks 3DTV [PS3]

1080p high-definition gaming is, like, sooo 2009. That’s the story according to Sony bossman Howard Stringer, who reckons we’ll all be playing in three glorious dimensions sooner than we know it…

Speaking at Berlin’s IFA technology trade show, Stringer revealed that the PS3 is already fully compatible with a range of 3D televisions that Sony is expected to launch next year. More to the point, Stringer predicts that every home will have one before 2010 is out.

Okay, so maybe the big fella was exaggerating to make a point. However there’s no denying which way the 3D train is rolling. Sony claims it is ready to “drive it home” and industry sources talk about a number of PS3 3D games already in development. Furthermore, several other TV manufacturers are getting in on the act and SKY has announced its intentions to launch a dedicated 3D TV channel in the not too distant future.

Against all this there’s just the small matter of cost to consider. It’s all very well for Stringer to dream about market saturation within the next 18 months, but who, apart from cash-rich nearly adopters, will be forking several Grand for a 3D telly when HD is only just becoming affordable?

Still, as far as dreams go, Stringer’s is a good ‘un!
