Bethesda, super-talented RPG creator of ogre-sized hit Oblivion, has released new screen shots and a video of their forthcoming post-apocalyptic title, Fallout 3. Fallout 3 has been receiving widespread attention since its breathless announcement just prior to the E3 games show last week, not least because it’s the latest iteration in one of gaming’s best-loved series. The original Fallout, released in 1997, was a turn-based RPG set in a late 22nd century elaborate post-nuclear world heavily influenced by early twentieth century art, technology and society. Bethesda appears to be taking a similar stylistic approach in this sequel, the new trailer opening with a shot of an old valve radio playing delightful 1940’s dance music. Fallout 3 is played from a first person perspective, a move which will worry some fans used to the isometric original, while pleasing those who thought the technique worked well in Oblivion. The game is still a year away from release and so there’s clearly still a lot to do, but from what’s shown here, Fallout 3 promises to be one of the most individual, exciting and radiation-soaked worlds we’ve yet visited.
