Charts: GTA IV-ever! [X360]

Wednesday May 28, 10:44 AM

It’s a fourth week at the top for Rockstar’s awesome Grand Theft Auto IV. Otherwise we have three brand new entries to report, including a high placing for Haze. Gosh!

There’s not a lot more we can say about GTAIV, having eulogised the heck out of the game in the week’s running up to launch and at almost boringly regular intervals since then. Suffice to say that if you haven’t yet bought into the phenomenon and you’re old enough to do so, well, just do so – and at your earliest possible convenience.

Moving on the all format/full price top ten is uncharacteristically chocka with new releases, all cluttering the upper reaches. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures resides at two. In an ordinary week (i.e one without GTAIV) it may well have made the top spot. As it stands Age of Conan is merely the biggest PC launch this year and the next largest online-only PC launch ever after the mighty World of Warcraft. We reckon Eidos will be happy with that.

Next up Haze at number three. Hand on heart, Free Radical’s future-shooter isn’t really much to write home about, as many of you may well by discovering right now. That said, its lofty placing does rather neatly demonstrate the triumph of marketing and cold, hard cash over the power and influence of mediocre reviews. So some sort of respect is due, right?

After that it’s fives across the board for Rock Band. A number five chart position and a five out of five review from us. Rock Band certainly deserves its high placing, but we’re still slightly surprised to see it in the top ten given the brain-melting cost of the full kit needed to get the most out of the game. And, speaking of brain-melting cost, cast your eye over this week’s countdown. Notice anything missing?

Yup, Wii Fit. The former chart topper has plummeted from two to 25. We’d love for the game to have held onto its top ten placing. However if Nintendo can’s be bothered manufacturing enough units to satisfy demand we can’t be bothered to be nice about it any more. So, good riddance!

Anyway here’s how the top ten chart comprising games that you can actually buy on the UK high street looks for the week ending May 24th:

1. Grand Theft Auto IV (1)
2. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (NE)
3. Haze (NE)
4. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (4)
5. Rock Band (NE)
6. Mario Kart Wii (3)
7. FIFA 08 (9)
8. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (5)
9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (8)
10. Iron Man: The official Videogame (6)
