A little over a month to go but the race for the Xmas number one may already be over - Call of Duty: World at War is top of the all formats charts. Bang on!

It was a close-fought thing, though, what with Wrath of the Lich King launching in the same week and shifting in sufficient quantities to become the fastest-selling PC game ever - beating a record set by Championship Manager 4 back in 2003, no less. CoD:WaW could only manage to be the third fastest-selling console game (behind GTAIV and GTA: San Andreas) in comparison.

Either way it’s a double victory for Activision/Blizzard, which publishes both titles. Actually make that a treble, in view of Guitar Hero: World Tour’s elevation to six on the back of the newly released complete band pack. Those three titles account for a quarter of all games sold in the last week, according to Chart Track’s overly diligent statisticians.

But other games are available - and some of them might be deemed blockbusters, even if their status is not necessarily reflected in their sales.

Football Manager 2009 fares best at this week’s three but Nintendo’s Chrimbo contender, Wii Music, doesn’t debut until 14. Meanwhile Mirror’s Edge manages a frankly undeserved 16 - one place behind LittleBigPlanet, which has fallen from last week's four. Speaking of which Fallout has done just that and is down from three to 12. Wii Fit and Quantum of Solace find themselves similarly ousted. But, y’know, it’s all in the game.
