Sony bets the farm on Killzone 2 [PS3]

Friday January 30, 01:13 PM Sony bets the farm on Killzone 2

As recent financial figures reveal Sony’s been having a difficult time of it lately. However, when the going gets tough the tough go shopping, and Sony has got four million eager squids to spend in the UK promotion of its first quarter biggies - and a few undersold oldies too.

We’re not sure whether that’s an especially large amount of money or not - particularly for a company with so much on its plate and the increasingly urgent need to play catch-up with its competitors. However there’s no doubting the sizeable wedge they’ve set aside to promote Killzone 2 (pictured), which launches on Feb 27th.

Indeed Sony plans to spend half the available cash on the PS3 shooter, sharing the fiscal love between a large-scale TV and cinema campaign, assorted in-store bits n’ pieces, multifarious online activities and good, old-fashioned PR to the nation’s highly influential (ahem) games journalists and uber-cool style leaders (ahem, again). In short it’s doubtful you’ll be able to miss it over the next few weeks.

Which leaves just two million to cover everything else in Sony’s portfolio. Some of that’ll go towards plugging SingStar: Queen which launches on PS3 and PSP in March. Also Resistance Retribution, Buzz! Brain of the UK and the new PSP colours incoming.

Whatever’s left over after that spending spree will be reserved to re-push LittleBigPlanet and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, both of which, Sony still insists, were tragically overlooked in the fuss and furore of last Xmas - i.e. when UK gamers had the temerity and lamentable lack of foresight to buy games on rival console formats instead. Fools etc…
