The Sunday Times reports that Microsoft is working closely with the Beeb to deliver video-on-demand content via Xbox LIVE.

As Microsoft readies its Video Marketplace service for Europe via Xbox LIVE, yesterday's Sunday Times grabbed confirmation that BBC content is among the top priorities. While stateside it’s all about Warner, Fox and CBS the big-hitters this side of the pond don’t get much heavier than the BBC.

Microsoft’s senior director for media told Sunday Times correspondent Dominic Rushe: “We are working diligently on multiple fronts to make it happen. The BBC is a great content provider.”

High definition BBC programming such as Planet Earth is already available in the UK free of charge via Virgin Media digital receivers. However the appeal of Xbox 360 as an all-encompassing media player would certainly be improved with the Beeb onboard. A similar prize is also being pursued by Sony for PS3 and PSP, and both companies are in talks with several European content providers ongoing.
