The sequel to the Nintendo DS blockbuster of 2007 will be here on 27 February, but we have insider info like you wouldn’t believe today.

Spectrobes is a role-playing adventure game for Nintendo DS launched by Disney in 2007 with the sole purpose of becoming a kids’ global phenomenon. It may seem cynical, but this was a plan that all came together as Spectrobes became the top-selling third-party DS game in America and topped the DS charts across Europe.

This sequel, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals, was inevitable. In fact it was no doubt on the drawing board before the first one hit store shelves. Whatever, it’s huge and here’s all about it.

Beyond the Portals continues its fascination with interplanetary patrol officers Rallen and Jeena, whose job it is to excavate and raise strange creatures called Spectrobes. These mystical animals are the only beings that can combat the Krawl, alien invaders intent on taking over the universe. Make sense? Never mind.

In the old game you could only control Rallen, but Beyond the Portals allows kids to employ Jeena’s research skills to help with problem solving and travel to other dimensions. There are new excavation techniques, and more battle options that include online versus scenarios. Visually Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals is radically changed too having made the move to 3D.

Vilanox is equipped with a huge mobile cannon. He’s a defensive type Spectrobe, so he serves as great protection during battle, but he also has great offensive skills
