PS3 deathwatch update #293

Monday July 2, 12:38 PM

How about some simple maths for a Monday?

Last month the Wii sold 270,974 units in Japan, according to Enterbrain. Meanwhile the PS3 managed just 41,628 and the Xbox 360 a mere 17,616. Now according to our admittedly remedial calculations that means the Wii has outsold the PS3 at a rate exceeding 6:1 and the 360 at a frankly hilarious 15:1!

That’s a spanking whichever way you want to view it, and it’s getting progressively worse too. This is the third consecutive month of growth for the Wii and the gap, nay, yawning chasm between its rivals is widening – last month it was only outpacing the PS3 by 5:1! We’ll, er, ignore the 360’s pitiful flounderings for the time being.

But while watching the PS3’s continued hoofing is a source of much entertainment software sales paint a very different, more worrying picture. The current Japanese software chart is dominated by titles on handheld formats while Wii-specific games are rather more conspicuous by their absence – and the format is not exactly overblessed with very many absolutely must-have pieces of software in the immediate future either.

Still, that won’t concern Nintendo when they can flog copies of Wii Sports to newbie middle-aged gamers until the cows come home...
