Scarface: The World Is Yours

Friday July 6, 5:14 PM Scarface: The World Is Yours

In the absence of GTA or any such crime spree on Wii the arrival of Tony Montana stands for much more than he did on PS2 last year. Wii gets the same basic game – in which Montana survives the infamous mansion shoot out to continue his dirty business – but with slightly cleaner visuals and of course new options for control. The game wears its BBFC 18 certificate loud and proud, which gives you a pretty good idea of what’s in store. And, yes, this does include drugs and chainsaws.

Just like Tony himself, Scarface: The World Is Yours relies on dark humour to off-set the violence. Tony’s actions fuel his ‘Balls Meter’, as a key example, that fuels his ‘Blind Rage’ allowing him to unleash unholy wotnot on anyone unfortunate enough to stand in his way. It’s clear the game’s creators thoroughly enjoyed realizing Montana as the original short-fused short-ass in town. It couldn’t have been any other way.

As the player your time is spent doing drug deals and gradually extending Tony’s ‘influence’ within a snazzy reconstruction of Miami c.1980s. The ultimate goal is to exact Montana’s revenge on nemesis Alejandro Sosa. You’ll use the Wii remote to point and aim, the nunchuck to direct Tony’s movement or – when given a shake – to issue taunts or – when given a bigger shake – unleash his Blind Rage. Driving, because there’s a fair bit of this required too, is also more intuitive using the Wii controls. Nothing groundbreaking but still superior to the PS2 / Xbox set up.

All things considered Scarface is a classy addition to an older gamer’s Wii collection. This was a big-budget production of movie-like proportions and it shows, from authentic Pacino-Montana quips, amusing dialogue from Hollywood scriptwriter David McKenna (Blow, American History X) and around 30 hours of pacey missions that also allow for lots of GTA-style pratting about. Although the GTA comparisons are inevitable, The World Is Yours does enough to distance itself as a compelling game in its own right.
