Ubisoft’s awesome-looking crusade ‘em up Assassin’s Creed promises to elevate the PS3 and Xbox 360 to new heights of graphical realism. Hopefully the gameplay will be worthy of note too. Either way it’s a next-gen game through-and-through – so what the blue blazes are they playing at with a DS version?

That’s just what US retail giants Gamestop are listing at the moment. They’ve even gone as far as posting a price, release date ($29.99 and 25/9/07) and picture of the box art too. Alas, no screens were available or could be sourced but we’d really, really like to see what they look like!

So this is a bit of a puzzler – there’s no mention or even sly hint of a DS version of this game anywhere within the Ubisoft vast universe and company representatives were not available at the time of writing to issue the expected statements of surprise and outright denial. Nevertheless it’s hard to imagine that a company of Gamestop’s gargantuan size is mistaken or could have made the whole thing up, so we reckon Assassin’s Creed DS is coming, like it or not – and we’re not entirely sure we do. A Prince of Persia-styled 2D side-scroller, perhaps?
