Hark! Is that the sound of Nintendo tootling their own trumpet? They have every reason to – the Wii has just chalked up one million sales in the UK. Wowsers! Impressive, no? Indeed, according to Nintendo and pollsters Chart Track a cool million shifted in just nine months makes the Wii the fastest-selling home console in UK videogame history. Hark! Is that the sound of Nintendo execs shouting ‘IN YOUR FACE! down the phone to their Sony and Microsoft counterparts? Mining a little deeper into the figures it appears that the Wii passed the million mark in just 38 weeks which, fact-fans, is some 22 weeks faster than it took the Xbox 360 to reach the same level and 11 weeks faster than even the mighty PlayStation 2. Of course it remains to be seen whether the Wii goes on to surpass the latter in terms of lifetime sales. Somehow we doubt it. Then again demand for Wii has been consistently high since launch and through the traditional summer drought, and current market share figures for the Wii and DS – 68% and 86% respectively – certainly put Nintendo on the right track. And let’s not forget the big guns in their arsenal either – Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, More Brain Training etc. It should be an interesting Xmas - particularly now that the Halo 3-playing Xbox 360 is the same price...
