Wii pummels PS3 but is trounced by 360

Monday December 11, 12:28 PM

For the 50,000 of you who were lucky enough to go home with a Wii last Friday the following story will make you feel justified in your choice of console. As if you weren’t smug enough already. The rest of you who weren’t quite so lucky will just... well, let’s not start reliving those feelings of burning anger, tearful resentment and bitter disappointment again...

Anyway, putting our smiley hats and rosey specs back on for a moment we can reveal that the console has outsold the Playstation 3 in the US. Yep, you already knew it and we were certain of it but now it’s been officially confirmed by the NPD research group and reported by the reputable Reuters news agency – so it’s got to be true, right? As NPD has it the Wii has shifted 476,000 units in Novmeber compared to the PS3’s 197,000. So that’s more than twice as many in half the time. Impressive, no?

So the Wii has done very well. ‘Tis a pity, then, that both the Wii and PS3 are getting their silicon butts righteously hoofed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which has sold 511,000 units in the same time-frame – and you don’t hear them showing off about it either! Call it the "Gears Effect".

Against all this argy-bargy news also reaches us that the PS3 sales have just overtaken the 360’s in Japan, but that the Wii has done better than the pair of them combined. By all accounts this performance constitutes Nintendo’s second-best launch ever, with only the DS making a stronger debut. Either way it looks like it's going to be a real three horse race from now on, folks. Who is your money on?
