Nintendo’s radical motion-sensing videogame, Wii Sports, bagged six out of a possible 13 awards at last night’s British Academy Video Games Awards. It was a grand slam evening for Nintendo at Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park. Wii Sports deservedly earned the Kyoto Corp six gongs: ‘Gameplay’, ‘Casual’, ‘Innovation’, ‘Multiplayer’, ‘Strategy & Simulation’ and ‘Sports’. The judges had to think long and hard before making their decision on that last one. Vic Reeves hosted the event, which also saw Capcom’s Zelda-esque doggy quest, Okami, collect ‘Artistic Achievement’, and ‘Original Score’ while Microsoft’s Crackdown for Xbox 360 brought into custody ‘Action & Adventure’ and ‘Use of Audio’. The political circle was complete with Sony’s God of War 2 pillaging ‘Story & Character’ and ‘Technical Achievement’. Somehow, by democratic vote we guess, BioShock beat Gears of War to the ‘Best Game’ award. And that was the end of the industry say so. As for the gaming public, apparently you all voted for Football Manager 2007, which now bears the accolade ‘The PC World Gamers’ Award’. Nice one Sports Interactive, nice one son. Gaming legend Will Wright, responsible for The Sims but before that SimCity, was welcomed into The Fellowship – the highest form of recognition that the BAFTAs can bestow. If you’d like to watch the presentations, and hear some of the speeches made in receipt, the event is being broadcast on E4 at 11pm, 4 November 4 then repeated the following week on Channel 4.
