Thanks to quizshow-style videogames such as Buzz and Scene It, the trivia game has become a popular feature of many family households around Christmas time. Th!nk Fast combines elements of both these influences, providing a gameshow format quiz for fans of Disney’s best known movies. While none of Pixar’s output is included on the disc (no Toy Story or Wall-E, sadly), the game delves into the animation studio’s impressive back catalogue, showing off high quality movies clips from classics as old as Snow White all the way up to more recent entries such as Lilo and Stitch.
You begin by picking a contestant to play as and a stage to play in. Each is themed around a different Disney film. Your host for most of the game is Genie, the blue, wispy lamp-dweller originally voiced by a hyperactive Robin Williams in the movie Aladdin. The default difficulty assumes a moderate amount of Disney knowledge although, for those playing with younger children, this can be tweaked to make the challenge more gentle.
The rounds themselves ape those seen in other trivia-based titles such as an observation game, which shows you a film clip and then asks questions about what you’ve seen, and a sketch round which draws a character on screen asking you to identify it before the timer runs out. There are also questions about well-known Disney sidekicks, heroes and villains and ones that ask you to identify theme music. Interspersed with the Disney-related questions are various general knowledge questions, although these are much more straightforward and will be manageable for even very young children.
Every now and again a ‘guest’ will pop up, usually tied to the stage theme that you’ve picked (e.g. Sebastian if you’ve chosen The Little Mermaid stage to play in) and will ask questions about the film that they’re originally from. The controls are simple, displaying four multiple-choice options on the screen which can be selected either with a tap of the d-pad or, alternatively, a flick of the Wiimote. The latter control scheme can be a little inaccurate so we recommend using the d-pad for precision.
A handful of unlockable characters and bonus outfits with which to dress your characters round off a well-presented and slick package. Thanks to the game’s primary subject matter this is a family game through and through and with robust execution that’s worthy of the Disney name, and a decent number of questions that ensure it will be some time before they repeat, it comes recommended to young families this Christmas.
