BBC techno blogmeister, Darren Waters, has spent a bit of quality face-time with Sony recently. Nothing out of the ordinary in that, you might suppose. However, so famously did everyone get on that Waters was treated to a preview of a forthcoming PS3 game that left him “speechless”. But first things first, and prior to his big reveal Waters was given a glimpse at a couple of known famous name sequels in the making – Motorstorm 2 and Resistance Fall of Man 2. Doubtless Sony will get around to adding the inevitable colons and subtitles to these games in the fullness of time, eh? Anyway, Motorstorm 2 is destined for a Xmas 08 release and, according to this first sighting, rights an earlier wrong by adding four-player split-screen play. That, on its own, would make the franchise several degrees cooler but the new game’s verdant, island-bound settings sound plenty promising too. Put another way it’s already on our Christmas list. Ditto Resistance: FOM 2. Waters was shown a tasty pre-release trailer which demoed an “epic” quality that, if we’re honest, is missing from the rather flat original. However, better than all that is the thought of 60-player online blastathons and the developer’s closing promise that “You haven’t seen what we are truly capable of.” Well, that’s all very good and we’re certainly looking forward to seeing a lot more of these two as the year progresses. but we’re much more interested in Waters’ comments following a sneak peak at a mystery title that is not due to launch until 2009. “…All I can say is that I was left speechless,” he says, before continuing enticingly: “If the footage I was shown truly is ‘in game’, as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.” What kind of “step change” could he possibly be talking about, we wonder? Whatever the case the project is so secret that departing Sony exec Phil Harrison only acknowledged its existence once he was comfortable that Waters had signed a cast iron non-disclosure agreement. Blimey! Needless to say such intrigue has got the chatrooms alight with speculation – God of War 3, Eight Days, The Getaway 3 and Heavy Rain being current popular guesses. We could add a few more titles to that list too, but we’re thinking it’s more likely to be a brand new game. More soon no matter what, though…
