Wii gathers dust [NGC]

Here’s a not altogether unsurprising factoid - according to Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu Weekly publishers Enterbrain, 67% of the Wii’s user base haven’t plugged in and played their innovative little console in a long, long time.

We’re not certain where Hamamura gets his information from but it feels kind of right, doesn’t it? Think about it - we’re sure most Wii-owning gamers are getting moderate use out of it, but what has there been to keep the mainstream masses entertained since Wii Sports? Eh? When’s the last time you saw Grandma cast aside the zimmer and dare to challenge your Wii Bowling high score? Exactly…

But Hamamura isn’t especially disparaging about Nintendo as a whole. Indeed, he’s predicting that forthcoming blockbusters such as Wii Fit could cause many of the part-timers to blow the dust off their consoles and start playing again. Elsewhere he reckons that the DS will beat the 30 million shipment mark in Japan in the not too distant future too. Er, gosh…

Elsewhere Hamamura notes the recent PS3 price drop as marking the machine’s real arrival in the next-gen market but says that the key to future success is cool first-party titles like GT5 rather than potential platform-jumpers like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy XIII. Heck, he’s probably right too, although other cool first-party titles do seem a little thin on the ground at present...
