USA: Wii rules but 360 beats PS3 [X360]

NPD figures for September paint a familiar picture of total Nintendo domination but also show that the recent Xbox 360 price cuts are having the desired effect. Well, sort of…

You see the Xbox 360 is discounted across its whole range and the US market has certainly appreciated the difference, lapping up 347,000 units in September compared to just (just!) 195,200 in August. However, being cheaper means that MS has to sell an awful lot more boxes in order to keep revenues on an even keel. Alas that’s a feat they haven’t quite managed, with revenues for the year-to-date dropping to $498 million from $546 million last year. But a sales increase is a sales increase, right - and the Xbox 360 has always been a bit of a loss-leader for Microsoft, especially at these crazy new prices!

Speaking of loss-leaders the PS3 has had a decent month too, shifting 232,000 units compared to 185,000 in August. Meanwhile 173,000 PS2s were sold and 238,000 PSPs. Yep, we reckon Sony will be moderately happy with that, particularly since all items were sold at something approaching full-price.

So that leaves the real show-stealers, Nintendo, whose sales, it’s fair to say, are liberally hosing over those of their so-called rivals. 537,000 DS units and 687,000 Wiis. And that, friends, is how you spell Conclusive!
