Nintendo's numbers: Bigger than anyone else's...

Yesterday it was EA airing their year-end financials, today it’s Nintendo’s turn. As you might expect they’re a bit more impressive.

In fact, while others have posted big losses, Nintendo has announced record profits, finishing the year-ending March 31st with a profit of 279.1 billion Yen – that’s $2.8billion or, we think, something the region of £1,847,533,753 and 44p. Either way it’s up significantly from the 257.3 billion Yen profit generated the previous year. Moreover it’s plenty in anyone’s money!

There is a slight downside to all this, though. Results for the final three months of the financial year actually showed a sharp drop – from 93.18bn Yen last year to 53.93bn this year. This appears to be a direct result of the widely reported declining sales and Nintendo is already forecasting an 11.8% reduction in profits for the next 12 months as a result. Wii sales will be flat and DS sales will slide by 4%, they reckon.

Financial facts n’ figures aside, Nintendo also rolled out a handful of very impressive sales statistics. Check ‘em out:

• DS hardware sales to date exceed 100 million units worldwide – 31 million in the last year.
• Worldwide Wii sales now top 50 million – 26 million shifted last year.
• 220 million pieces of Wii software sold so far, 180 million for DS.
• Wii Fit lifetime sales currently stand at 18.22 million. Meanwhile Mario Kart Wii does 15.4 million.
• 54 Wii games have sold over a million each, including Animal Crossing (3.38m) and the critically slated Wii Music (2.65m).
• The DS Brain Training series rules the roost with 31.12 million sold.
• Pokemon Platinum has sold 3.75 million in Japan, and has yet to be released in Europe.

We don’t imagine Sony and Microsoft will be enjoying the taste of them apples. But let’s see what they have to say in their own year-end financial statements.
