Wii and DS winning UK console wars [DS]

Friday July 3, 12:45 PM

There are 24.2 million consoles in the UK, according to newly-published GfK Chart-Track data. The Wii and DS seem to be dominating too. No kidding...

The figures compile lifetime console sales as they stand at June 27th 2009. It all breaks down in the following, handily-ranked order:

DS – 9.1m
Wii – 5.4m
Xbox 360 – 3.9m
PSP – 3.3m
PlayStation 3 – 2.2m
DSi – 0.3m

Mining a little deeper, and we see more or less the same ranking in terms of year-on-year growth. The DS, for instance, had a user base of 6.4 million in June 08, so has piled on 2.7 million new sales in the intervening 12 months. Meanwhile Wii sales have grown from 3.1 million in ‘08 to the current figure – a hike of 2.3 million, to save you doing the maths.

The Xbox 360 has a clear lead on its rival, adding 1.7 million since last year, where the PS3 managed only 900,000. Let’s see if Sony can spin that into something positive. At least the PSP is truly motoring, with 1.1 million new sales

Finally, the DSi. 300K is a decent start for a brand new machine. More impressive, it achieved nearly a third of its sales in the first weekend alone – 92K. We’re guessing it’ll have grown even more significantly by this time next year.
