Japan: DSi doing business [DS]

Friday October 23, 12:12 PM

The DSi, as is becoming drearily inevitable, continues to rule the roost in Japan. We can only imagine that Japanese gamers are buying several for themselves and one for each of their family members – cats and goldfish included. Otherwise we’re having difficulty computing how else Nintendo’s spiffy handheld manages to sell like the hottest cakes, week after week after week...

Totals for the seven days spanning October 12-18 show things on a downward trajectory – especially the DSi, which was pumping out more than 60K very recently, but none moreso than the PlayStation 3, which pulled a 150K sale out of the bag when the PS3 Slim launched. However this week's sale, crucially, is still a small towns-worth of streets ahead of the Xbox 360, which is precisely Nowheresville in comparison.

DSi – 49,145
PSP – 33,508
PS3 – 30,231
Wii – 29,965
Xbox 360 – 3,662
DS Lite – 2,590
PS2 – 2,109

Software-wise, the charts are the usual mix of games you’ve never heard of, the occasional familiar face or two plus a bit of Pokémon chucked in for good measure. Nintendo formats dominate, needless to say, with a full half of the top 50 on Wii or DS. Anyway, here’s how the big ten line up for the week:

1. Pokémon Heart Gold & Pokemon Soul Silver (DS) – 164,721
2. Wii Fit Plus (Wii) – 11,167
3. Friends Collection (DS) – 63,086
4. Inazuma Eleven (DS) – 60,580
5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) – 53,827
6. Okami Wii (Wii) – 23,810
7. Wii Sports Resort (Wii) – 22,808
8. Gran Turismo (PSP) – 22,027
9. Strange Journey (DS) – 19,642
10. Love Plus (DS) – 19,561
