Customs officials have seized batches of “dangerous” counterfeit Nintendo handhelds bound for the UK market. Erk! The DS and DS Lite consoles look like the real thing but the price should be enough to rouse your suspicions. Basically the counterfeits were sourced in the Far East and are being sold in the UK for around £40 - less than half the recommended retail price of £100 or so. You’d understand anybody being tempted by such attractive price point, however the risk of tears upon realising you haven’t got the genuine article is not the only danger. Indeed no, and HM Revenue and Customs is warning that the fakes are supplied with potentially dangerous power adapters: "At best these consoles would have led to disappointment on Christmas morning. At worst they could have caused serious harm or injury," says the Revenue’s Pamela Rogers. So our advice, as forehead-slappingly obvious as it is, is to shop wisely this Xmas. Don’t be afraid to look the gift-horse in the mouth, only buy from reputable retailers and be super wary of any offer that seems too good to be true - it almost certainly is!
