Slowly but surely the Xbox 360’s collection of Games on Demand is building into something approaching a library. Props to Microsoft too for not releasing any old back-catalogue tat on their download service – i.e. unlike others we could mention. (Cough – Nintendo) To wit, today’s pairing, both of which would make fine additions to any self-respecting gamer’s shelf. Of course, most self-respecting gamers are likely to have ‘em already, and there’s a small chance they paid a good deal less than the asking prices touted here. But, hey-ho... Okay, first up is Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (GRAW, for short). This tactical, modern day military blaster looked amazing back in ’06 – still does – and the 360 outing boasted several features not seen in other ports. Notably, a first or third-person viewpoint, handy cover system, three commandable team-mates and an online co-op campaign mode. The latter’s where the long-term fun is, and it may encourage you to overlook the £19.99 you’ve just forked out for the game. Bargain hunters will find boxed copies for as little as £6.75 online, though. Much cheaper still if you’re prepared to buy pre-owned. The above caveats apply to the second of this week’s offerings too. Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Sam Fisher faces the unenviable task of infiltrating a terrorist organisation in order to destroy it from the inside. The challenge that ensues is stealthy, acrobatic, seat-edgingly tense, great-looking throughout and surprisingly brutal. It’s also augmented by a killer 3 vs 3 player mode and a host of other gameplay options to keep you busy long after the single-player game is completed. The problem comes in stacking the £19.99 asking price for the download against the tenner we saw a boxed copy for online. But buyer beware, and all that. In any case, less than £20 for such top-notch gaming entertainments is still cheap, isn’t it? Plus there's the additional thrill of believing that you're blazing some kind of trail into the wild and exciting digitally-downloadable future. Or, er, something...
