The Mercedes-Benz SLS-AMG is one of the star motors in Gran Turismo 5. However a new promotional video for the automotive eye-catcher reveals rather more than may have been planned. The footage talks about the lavish new Merc, and how impressive it is in both reality and the virtual world, thanks to its faithful reproduction in GT5. Cut to Polyphony Digital, where visionary bossman Kazunori Yamauchi is seen handling what appears to be the final packaging. Truth be told the artwork is nothing to write home about, with a big ‘5’ dominating the proceedings. But more interesting is the fact that the box Yamauchi is holding clearly contains three cases – one black, one red, one blue. So, what can that mean? Is GT5 really so massive and minutely-detailed that it can only fit on three separate Blu-Ray discs? We guess having to fill up to 150GB of storage space goes a long way towards explaining why GT5 has been five flipping years in development. However it’s much more likely that at least one of these discs will contain extras of some description – artworks, making-of documentaries and the like. One thing is for sure, whatever the case, and that’s the quality of GT5’s awesome visuals. The footage may be low-res, but it’s clear that Polyphony Digital has done a stunning job of bringing real-world supercars to virtual life. There’s lots of in-game footage and interesting titbits from Yamauchi-san to chew on too – search sites like Youtube for “Mercedes SLS AMG Gran Turismo 5 packaging” to see for yourselves. And roll on spring 2010...
