The new man at Sony Europe says that many Wii owners will eventually upgrade to PlayStation 3. What, like they’re made of money or something? Forgive our cynicism. In any case PlayStation Europe president, Andrew House, is drawing on past history. And his words at least acknowledge that Sony will, at some stage in the future, lop enough cash off the current PS3 asking price to make it attractive to a wider market. But let’s hear the big man speak: "If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life cycle when the price point was right for them," he tells Edge-online. "I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a (greater) wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace." Well, fair enough. PS2 sales really did go properly stratospheric once the price went down. Although, from our point of view, the upgrade to PS2 was less to do with pricing and more about the N64 being a bit rubbish (sorry). Either way, House’s predictions will only come true if Sony is prepared to dig deep and get discounting. And soon, please!
