Japan: PS3 sales slipping [DS]

Friday October 2, 09:53 AM

The latest Media Create figures show PlayStation 3 sales on the slide and Nintendo’s DSi continuing to reassert its dominance.

But how the mighty have fallen. The PS3 Slim launched with week one sales exceeding 150,000, but this week’s total is closer to 40,000. That’s a tumble of approximately 73.5% within the space of a month, which would be disastrous in normal circumstances. Fortunately it still leaves the Slim with enough sales to maintain second place, and with a sizeable margin over the rest of the competition – including the PSP and the Wii, which, of course, has sales woes of its own to bemoan.

Anyway, here’s how it all looks for the week of September 21-27, last week’s figures in brackets as usual:

DSi – 63,342 (66,073)
PS3 – 39,960 (51.055)
PSP – 17,334 (21,073)
DS Lite – 15,057 (13,555)
Wii – 11,731 (16,698)
Xbox 360 – 4,854 (4,965)
PS2 – 2,347 (2,723)

And the current Japanese software countdown pretty much reflects the status quo too. Check it, and marvel that any game has managed to loosen Pokémon’s stranglehold on the top spot:

1. Friend Collection (DS)
2. Pokémon Heart Gold (DS)
3. Pokémon Soul Silver (DS)
4. Tales of Vesperia (PS3)
5. Powerful Pro Baseball portable 4 (PSP)
6. Wii sports Resort (Wii)
7. SaGa 2: Goddess of Destiny (DS)
8. Dragon Quest 9 (DS)
9. Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360)
10. Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force 4 (PSP)

More Japanese chart-based fun, games and head-scratching stats this time next week. Nope, we can’t wait either…
