UK Game thefts on the up [X360]

Blame the credit crunch, or the high price of new software releases – both, probably. Either way shoplifting, credit card frauds, break-ins and staff pilfering are all increasing at UK games retail.

A new study published by Simplybusiness.co.uk paints a dreary picture, showing that 47% of games outlets have experienced a significant increase shoplifting thefts with a further 26% reporting a higher level of actual break-ins. The usage of dodgy credit cards has rocketed too, according to 31% of UK retailers.

Finally, it seems that more games shop staff are getting in on the five-finger-discount action too, as 24% of retailers can exasperatedly testify. Bad staff, no biccies...!

“This rise in recession-related crime is heaping more misery on the beleaguered retailers,” Simplybusiness MD Tony Deacon tells gamestrade mag MCV.

“Nearly half of all retailers in the UK have experienced an upsurge in theft and this is having a major impact on their ability to remain profitable and remain in business.”
