In Japan, that is, but this is where it really hurts Sony. Sales figures from Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain laid it all bare.

Reuters Tokyo this morning published a report on the current state of console hardware sales in Japan. According to sales figures obtained from magazine publisher and research firm Enterbrain, PlayStation 3 sold through 54,823 units throughout July whereas Nintendo Wii cleared 171,851. Figures represent the four weeks ending 27 July.

Wii’s low price-point combined with innovative and wide reaching titles such as Wii Sports and Wii Fit are once again attributed to Nintendo’s ongoing success with Wii. However during the same period Nintendo DS fell short of Sony’s PSP retail performance with respective sales of 217,639 versus 256,765.

Owing to flagging DS sales many industry analysts are now suggesting that a remodelled version of DS, possibly even a brand-new system, is not far away from being announced. The new DS could even release in Japan before Christmas. Watch this space.
