Raise a glass to the Guinness top 50 games

Fri Feb 27 02:44PM by Unlikely Hero

The Guinness World Records organisation has released what it considers to be the top 50 most important console games of all time.

It’s all part of the newly published Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition and it‘s most certainly not the definitive list. No doubt there can never be such a thing when game-taste is such a subjective matter.

Neither is the list based on sales alone, since the panel of industry experts assembled to compile it also gave due consideration to such matters as impact, lasting legacy and the good old fun factor. We’re also supposed to bear in mind that some of the entries - Mario Kart and Tetris, for instance - represent franchises rather than individual games. As such it’s slightly puzzling to see Grand Theft Auto turning up on three separate occasions.

Then there are the real head-scratchers - Crash Bandicoot, Saturn Bomberman and Outrun 2, for a kick-off. Has nothing better been published in the years since they made their debut? Apparently not.

However, as we said, it’s just the opinion of a bunch of informed games pundits. It’s probably specifically designed to inspire a bit of debate too. That being the case take a look at the following, best game first. Do you agree with the experts’ choices? If not, what would be your top five games?

No Gears of War? Fallout 3? Call of Duty? ....there are still some pretty good games up there but Final Fantasy 12 being better than Final Fantasy 7. No Chance.

Well, apart from carlingbons' suggestions. The rest are shit. Only joking, but they are by far important games. I really didn't like Bioshock but loads of people went on and on about it being revolutionary so I accept it. Besides, Call of Duty 4 is on here, you don't need both.
