DS keeps it in the family

Grand Theft Auto recently made its bid for a more mature audience on Nintendo DS, but the little console welcomes the kids back home this weekend.

Parents and young children will be glad to see the arrival of two more games in the ‘Imagine' range from Ubisoft out today. "Imagine My Restaurant" and "Imagine Doctor" add to the line-up of 16 titles that has been steadily growing this past couple of years, proving firm favourites throughout Christmas with 300,000 copies sold in the UK alone in the four weeks leading up to the holiday. To date the series has shifted over a million in the UK.

Imagine Teacher and Imagine Dream Weddings have been the stand-out games in the series, but we think that Imagine Doctor and Imagine My Restaurant have similarly inspiring themes. The latter could even tempt anyone hooked on coffee-break games such as Diner Dash and Cake Mania. And who hasn't wanted to play Doctor as a child? These games are simple but well thought out and have educational benefits. We think publishers Ubisoft will continue to reap deserved rewards.

Also for kids, but offering light-hearted goofy fun, is Disney's "Phineas and Ferb" for Nintendo DS. It's for ages three and up, so won't have broader appeal however for its target audience but the ‘summer holiday' theme of adventure is gleefully presented. There are stacks of silly but inventive mini-games such as building the scariest roller-coaster imaginable or racing monster trucks. Phineas and Ferb, as with most recent Disney games, is compatible with the DGamer online community to safely share the fun with friends. Good, wholesome fun if that's what you're after heading into Easter.

This week also sees the release of "Monsters vs. Aliens" on just about every format imaginable, including DS of course. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions reflect the visual quality and narrative of the Dreamworks movie best of all, however as with the Bolt! games from Disney it's the DS and Wii versions that are the most engaging.

Finally don't forget that the first instalment of the "Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures" is now available for PC and Xbox 360. You can read more about this in our review published on Yahoo! UK Games today.

Personally i think that Nintendo has alienated some of its fan base. With all these kids games and so-called 'Brain Train' games currently filling the DS void, it seems that Nintendo has forgotten anyone over the age of 12. True, the Wii has some games of a mature content but not enough to make the older generation (16 - 24) buy the console. They dont seem to be too bothered about it either. I mean lets be serious, How many more puzzle games can they think of? I get the feeling its just a cash-in. I appologize about my rambling, I just used to be a HUGE fan of Nintendo and their franchise, however i have lost my faith. Lets hope their next console rekindles that faith. Oh... and a decent controller system. Some preferto relax when plating games.
