Rumours of a PSP-equipped mobile phone have been circulating more or less since the iPhone first rose to prominence, although Sony, true to form, has always refused to comment on what it deems to be rumour and speculation. But has Japan’s prestigious Nikkei business daily just undone Sony’s best efforts at keeping a secret?
The Nikkei isn’t generally known for spreading gossip or reporting on internet tittle-tattle, all of which lends considerable weight to this weekend’s report that Sony will be putting a project team tasked with the development of a new gaming mobile as early as this July.
A PSP mobile would certainly be a serious rival to the iPhone, and it’s already a known fact that Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama is keen on the idea. But wouldn’t such a product rather jeopardise the success of the PSP Go, which launches this autumn?
Of course, until such day as Sony confirms it, a PSP-powered mobile phone is still a rumour, albeit a convincing and utterly compelling one. All things considered, though, we might just wait and see what develops, rather than splash our hard-earned cash on the PSP Go. How about you...?
