Okay, we do kind of miss the excitement building toward the launch of a new console. And this used to keep us bouncing off the walls every five years or so. In fact original Xbox launched in 2002, followed by Xbox 360 in 2005 - just three years. Admittedly it was playing catch up against PlayStation that made its European debut in 1995, with PS2 here in 2000 before PS3 arrived 'fashionably late' to the party in 2007.
But now the games industry is officially slamming the brakes on technology upgrades, giving cash-poor consumers time to catch up with what's already available. An 80GB PlayStation 3 will still set you back in the region of £300 (yikes). We're even seeing the retail price of games going up instead of down thanks to our ailing economy.
Some experts claim we won't see another Xbox or PlayStation until 2012... the year the earth will come to an end. So there will be no point anyway. Besides, for the first time in our very long history of writing about videogames, we really don't mind at all. We're absolutely, 100 percent, perfectly happy with what we've got.
Frankly we've been down the new console road so many times in recent years that it's starting to become a bit tiresome. We say it's high time to settle down and play Secret of Monkey Island. Either that or browse some of the arcade classics on your online service. Forget about the box itself for a while, focus on the games. Just... relax.
Imagine how frustrating it would be if the final season of Lost was only watchable on some new-fangled TV next spring. Nah, we're happy that most games are arriving across Xbox 360 and PS3 these days. And by the time Christmas 2010 gets here we could probably own all three of the top consoles for less than it costs to buy a PS3 this year.
This morning we noticed that the Digitimes is citing sources in Taiwan that there will be a "new Xbox 360... slated for the second half of 2010". Man we hope they're wrong this time. We really do.
Of course we reserve the right to change our tune tomorrow.
