LittleBigPlanet arrives 24 October [PS3]

Monday September 22, 08:43 AM LittleBigPlanet arrives 24 October

"Get ready for gaming to change forever”. That’s the message from Sony as its PlayStation 3 magnum is readied for launch next month.

Sackboy and pals commence their adventures on PlayStation 3 from 24 October in the UK, with downloadable content already confirmed for launch. LittleBigPlanet will debut slightly earlier in the week in North and Latin America on 21 October, followed by Australia, New Zealand and our European neighbours on the 22nd. At least we’re beating Japan to the party, where LBP arrives during the week beginning the 27th.

Sony Computer Entertainment has promised a ‘long-term commitment’ to downloadable content for this do-as-you-please construct-’em-up adventure. Game creator Media Molecule has already lined up a free Spaceman costume and “Week One” t-shirt for the iconic Sackboy to wear early doors. Both are limited editions.

LittleBigPlanet is a charming adventure game in which cuddly-toy hero Sackboy explores obstacle courses designed by you the player. Sony provides 50 examples for starters, a fascinating puzzle game in its own right, after that it’s entirely up to you. The content-creation tools are said to be ‘the most intuitive and powerful’ ever offered to players. Whatever you create – from a simple seesaw to an SAS-style assault course and even new types of sports we guess – can be saved onto the PS3 hard-drive and shared online via PlayStation Network.

When LittleBigPlanet launches on 24 October what you get out of the box is only the beginning. Media Molecule and SCE are already talking about the possibility of multiplayer online level creation.

Will LittleBigPlanet make Christmas Number One? We get the feeling Sony has high hopes; high apple pie in the sky hopes, in the spirit of their cute new hero.
