Arcade classics for Facebook [PC]

Namco Bandai has resurrected a pair of evergreeen arcade games for social networking hub/thing, Facebook. Say hello, once again, to Pac-Man and Dig Dug.

Facebook already functions well beyond its original remit, with Scrabble, Uno, a decent Bejeweled clone and more. All free and playable within the Facebook browser. And that, alas, is where these latest offerings fall down.

You see, instead of bringing these eminently excellent (but unquestionably elderly) games to the Facebook masses without picking their pockets, Namco Bandai is proposing to charge $9.99 a pop. Worse than that, the games don’t open within the Facebook window and need to be downloaded separately. In other words they’re not exactly in the cost-free spirit of casual gaming that prevails elsewhere on Facebook, which has lead to some understable disgruntlement.

But it’s a start, and Namco Bandai is reportedly already preparing other back-catalogue titles for Facebook release. We’re guessing the likes of Galaxian and Rally-X rather than Ace Combat 6 or Soul Calibur IV. But you never know…
