It’s not often we’ve had cause to say this recently, but today’s Virtual Console release for Wii is an absolute stonker!” Be prepared to dig deep, though, because, Nintendo is asking 1000 Points - £8.50, thankyou please - for The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. That’s rather more than you might pay for a second-hand copy of the Nintendo 64 original on the world’s favourite internet auction site. Then again who the heck still has an N64 console in active service? In short, then, Majora’s Mask is deserving of your attention. Not least because it’s a sequel to the greatest game ever made - The Ocarina of Time - but also for its curious gameplay, in which Link finds himself trapped in a three day race to prevent an angry-looking moon crashing to earth. To which end each of the many challenges, dungeons, side quests etc needs to be completed within a 72 hour time-frame, otherwise Link must tootle on his ocarina and rewind time to restart from the beginning. It’s a less complex or frustrating system than we’re making it sound and it does reward a little patience on the player’s part. All the same Majora’s Mask left the critics a little flummoxed when it first landed and the game did not enjoy the massive success of its predecessor. And that’s another reason why it’s worthwhile checking out today. The way things have been lately you’ve probably got the Wii Points burning a hole in your pocket anyway…
