EA games for unfit mothers

Move over Wii Fit. In fact move over fitness fanatics who are neither female or in their middle 30s.

Yup, ‘EA Sports Active‘, a new line of Wii titles from canny publishing giants Electronic Arts, brings new meaning to the term niche marketing and compiles over 20 high octane workouts with time-pressed mid 30s mothers of two children in mind. That’s the “targeted sweet spot” according EA’s reliably hilarious Peter Moore, but we daresay gamers who don’t fit that very specific bill can play too.

A Wii fitness game is bound to be Balance Board-based, right? Not necessarily. The option to blow the dust off that chunky peripheral is certainly in there but EA Sports Active also utilises a pair of neoprene straps that attach the Wiimote or Nunchuck to the user’s legs After that there’s a rubber resistance band for strength training, an in-built personal trainer with 30-day weight-loss program, a nutritional handbook and a useful calorie-counting functionality. It all sounds rather more serious than Wii Fit. Whether that means users will keep to the program and not guiltily stuff the game back under the stairs after just a couple of sessions remains to be seen…

Either way, tell your mums to expect EA Sports Active sometime Spring 2009 for the rip-off Britain equivalent of $59.99.
