Charts: Tight at the top [X360]

Tuesday December 16, 09:09 AM Charts: Tight at the top

Last week’s top four games on the all format/full price chart are still firmly stuck in place. That’s pretty standard for this time of year when the big guns are blazing and the gaming masses like to play it safe. What is surprising, though is the relatively small number of sales separating the top two.

Just 27,000 copies prevent Mario Kart Wii from seizing the top spot from Call of Duty: World at War. On the one hand that’s loads, on the other it’s a modest day’s business for a AAA title at the peak of the gifting season. Put simply, if we all try really hard we can depose the unfestive noise-fest of CoD:WaW and install the unalloyed genius that is Mario Kart Wii - it’d be Nintendo’s first Xmas number one since Zelda: Ocarina of Time a decade ago too. Otherwise, as Chart Track stat-wranglers note, Call of Duty will have enjoyed the longest uninterrupted run-in to Xmas number one. And we can’t have that, can we. Can we…?

That minor skirmish aside there isn’t a single new entry inside the top 30, although Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa raises its fuzzy head at 31. However there’s plenty of midfield movement to report - notably Quantum of Solace up from 19 to nine, LittleBigPlanet climbing ten places to 11 and Sonic Unleashed leaping 15 places to this week’s 14. After that we notice that disappointment-of-the-year, Wii Music, has flopped from 15 to 25. Oh dear, how sad, never mind etc.

And on that bombshell here’s the countdown for the week ending December 13:

1. Call of Duty: World at War (1)
2. Mario Kart Wii (2)
3. FIFA 09 (3)
4. Need for Speed: Undercover (4)
5. Fallout 3 (6)
6. Wii Fit (7)
7. Guitar Hero: World Tour (8)
8. Tomb Raider: Underworld (5)
9. Quantum of Solace (19)
10. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
