Microsoft lets loose myRockBand; a new Facebook application within the ever-swelling online social network. Versions for PlayStation and Nintendo versions are still waiting in the wings, but this summer Rock Band is exclusive to Xbox 360. And, yes, Microsoft is making a big song and dance about it. The ‘Xbox 360 presents Rock Band Live’ campaign is already underway, inviting mime-along-a wannabes to strut their stuff on stage in the hope of winning an all-exes paid trip to the Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Now Microsoft has enlisted the help of digitaloulook to create a one-of-a-kind application for Facebook, allowing for a Rock Band style experience from within your own personal online destination. Just like Rock Band the videogame on Xbox 360, myRockBand allows you to form your own virtual band and master play-a-long-a tunes using your lead guitar, bass, drums or vocals. After naming the band and inviting your friends to join – yes they’ll all need to join Facebook too if they’re not on there already – you wait for the fans to respond. Other myRockBand users on Facebook can send comments such as ‘show them rock horns’, and ‘fling your knickers’ or even ‘boo the band’ and ‘put your fingers in your ears’ if they’re feeling nasty. It’s kind of like ‘writing on the wall’, one of the standard features within regular Facebook. Better yet, rival musos can challenge you for your place in the band, resulting in a simplistic but fun musical memory game. The fame to be had by doing all this takes the form of a news feed updated via the Facebook community home page. “It’s just like the videogame but even better,” says Stephen McGill, Head of Gaming & Entertainment, Entertainment & Devices Division, UK at Microsoft. Not sure EA would agree on that! Anyway, if you want some of this, go here now: http://apps.facebook.com/rockbanduk/
