Apologies for the lazily obvious headline, but what else are we supposed to use to accompany a report that the powerful Oblivion game engine is up and running on Wii?

So who was it that said the Wii was just two Gamecubes stuck together...? Okay, that might actually be sort of true, nevertheless Emergent Game Technologies has just revealed that its ‘Gamebyro’ graphics engine has been ported to the Nintendo Wii. In other words the same game engine as used to power the immense free-roaming RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on Xbox 360, PC and PS3. Wow!

“With the success of Nintendo's Wii console catching much of the industry off guard and offering fresh interactive features, developers need new tools to be able to develop for multiple platforms that offer vastly different capabilities and require different programming techniques,” says Emergent’s CEO, Geoffrey Selzer.

Well that’s great news for the future of Wii games, we think, and we must salute Mr. Selzer’s gravytrain-spotting capabilities too, although we don’t hold out too much hope of seeing Oblivion on Wii in this generation. But then again...
