PS3 Slim ignores back catalogue [PS3]

Times have moved on, and the catalogue of PlayStation 3 games is now large enough and of sufficient quality that you guys won’t need (or want) to use Sony’s next-gen machines to play last-gen discs. Good job too, since Sony’s slick new PS3 Slim doesn’t even offer the facility.

“People buy PS3s to play PS3 games,” Sony America’s John Koller tells Kotaku.com.

“Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3, there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think - and noticed this from our research - that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary.”

"...Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."

Well, yep, we guess that’s about right.

On other matters PS3-related it has been revealed that the new model has dropped support for Linux – no great shame there – and has lost the rear on/off switch. However it has added support for users with Sony Bravia HDTVs. Basically they’ll be able to take control of the XMB and other functions using their telly remotes. Very handy we’re sure.

Finally Koller admitted that he expects stocks of the old-style 80GB PlayStation 3 to dry up pretty quickly. In other words if you see a bargain or a tempting bundle grab it while you can. Grab like the wind!
