Activision sticks with PS2 [PS2]

Friday August 29, 4:12 PM

If the PS2 is a dying format nobody’s thought to tell Activision. They’re just about to release a veritable plethora of games for Sony’s slender last-gen system. Yeah, plethora, that’s a good word for a Friday afternoon.

Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones have done nice numbers thus far, so Activision bosses have needed little encouragement to develop more games for the aged system. Already progressing down the PS2 pipeline are such guaranteed heavy-hitters as Spiderman: Web of Shadows, James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Call of Duty: World at War. There’s plentiful fun for the little ‘uns too, with Shrek’s Carnival Craze, Barbie Horse Adventure: Summer Camp and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa all in prospect.

“Sony did an amazing job of extending the lifecycle of the PSOne and it is doing it again with the PS2,” says Activision’s UK MD, Andrew Brown, perhaps tactfully omitting to mention that Sony’s having a harder time repeating previous successes with the the PS3. But his reasons for sticking with the PS2 are easy enough to understand: “According to NPD, ChartTrack and GFK, there are more than 78 million PS2s in the market, making it by far the largest installed base of any console system to date. Activision will continue to support the PS2 so long as the platform is economically viable.” he adds. In other words load the cash cows aboard the Gravy Train, baby, and ride it hard! Fair play...
